I was just making a music video for Naruto and Dragon Ball for this coming Cosplay Party we’ll have in the office. As I was researching Naruto and DB (Dragon Ball) songs, I’ve come up with these few opinions from a lot of people on the internet, both on youtube and anime fansites. They say Naruto is a great anime series. Although I haven’t read the whole story of Naruto, I’ve watched some of its episodes. Well, I’ve watched the famous DB series. Not being bias here, I say the famous DB series just because it was really famous during my time… way back on elementary days. So I decided to make my own reviews about the two best Anime shows I’ve ever seen.

Dragon Ball (includes, Z and GT)

Since its release, Dragon Ball has become one of the most popular manga series of its time in both Japan and North America. It enjoys a high readership, with over 150 million volumes of the series sold by 2007. Several manga artists have noted that the manga series was the inspiration for their own now popular works, including Naruto and One Piece. The anime is also highly popular, ranking number 12 among the best anime series of all time in 2006. Reviewers praise the art, characterization, and humor of the manga story. The anime series have had more mixed reviews, with the first also praised for its characterizations, but the second was criticized for its long, repetitive fights, and the third series considered even more repetitive. My Own Reviews:

I have watched this series and I agree to the negative comments I’ve heard. Dragon Ball Z had long fight scenes. It took a month or more for the Goku-Cell fight to end. It was such a waste of time. But, what I found surprising, is that even though it was getting boring, I still couldn’t turn the TV off every time I hear the DB opening theme.

I always notice DB and Naruto fans don’t get along very well. They always compare the two big hits. These two shows are both great, but I’d always vote for DB to be greater, or even the greatest Anime. Simply because, it’s where the new anime series came from. Like one has said, it’s the Father of all Anime.

More Facts about Dragon Ball Series (From Wikipedia)

Dragon Ball is one of the most popular manga series of its time, and it continues to enjoy high readership today. By 2000, more than 126 million copies of its tankōbon volumes had been sold in Japan alone. By 2007, this number had grown to pass 150 million. It is the “quintessential mainstream manga” driven by an unending story. Its immense popularity resulted in the series being continuously extended, first through the use of acrobatic devices that regularly kept the series from falling into the routine characters and story lines, then by having the central characters surpass death itself using miraculous devises. In Little Boy: The Art of Japan’s Exploding Subculture Takashi Murakami notes that Dragon Ball’s “never-ending cyclical narrative moves forward plausibly, seamlessly, and with great finesse.” Goku’s journey and his ever growing strength resulted in the character winning “the admiration of young boys everywhere”. On several occasions the Dragonball anime series has topped Japan’s DVD sales. Click here for more.

Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk (スラムダンク, Suramu Danku?, officially romanized SLAM DUNK in Japan) is a sports-themed manga series written by Takehiko Inoue about a basketball team from Shōhoku High School. It was first serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan from 1990 to 1996. Inoue later used basketball as a central theme in two subsequent manga titles: Buzzer Beater and Real. My Own Reviews:

This has been my all time favorite. It was just a short anime series, but it was worth watching. The story was straight and although it was common, it still brought us excitement. I remember when I was highschool, I always go home early just to watch this. Who doesn’t know Hanamichi Sakuragi? Some people even say it was the life story of Dennis Rodman. But that was not a fact though. This was just another story.

After Slam Dunk, there’d been more sports-themed Anime series that followed. That inlcudes, Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21 and more.

More Facts about Slam Dunk (from Wikipedia)

Slam Dunk has sold over 100 million copies in Japan as of May 2007. In 1995, it received the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen. The success of Slam Dunk is cited as an influence in the increased popularity of basketball among the Japanese youth during 1990s. In a poll of over 79,000 Japanese fans for the 10th Japan Media Arts Festival, Slam Dunk was voted the #1 manga of all time. The English translation of Slam Dunk was listed one of the best comics of 2008 by Publishers Weekly. In a survey from Oricon in 2009, Slam Dunk ranked first as the manga that fans wanted to be turned into a live-action film. In the Japanese government’s Media Arts 100 Poll of the public’s favorite works of art of all time, Slam Dunk took first place in the manga division. The imprint version of Slam Dunk: 10 Days After has been highly popular in Japan, having initially ranked 6th and then 15th in a ranking of Japanese comics.

The anime adaptation has also been very popular in Japan. In TV Asahi’s Top 100 Anime show, Slam Dunk ranked as the 10th most popular anime. In another poll from TV Asashi but developed by a website, the series ranked 8th. The DVD boxes from the anime also had a good sale in Japan, having appeared in rankings from Japanese Animation DVD Ranking.
